Hey friends!
Hobby Farm…Two words that I never thought would be associated with my life. You see, I love animals but I am insanely allergic.
Ironically, as I am writing this post, I have rapidly emptied an entire box of tissues because I cannot stop sneezing. If a person were to watch me for any length of time through the windows, they would be certain that I was headbanging to Nirvana because of the constant back and forth motion my head is making with each sneeze. My eyes are swollen red and my head feels like the inside of a soda bottle after it has been shaken. The sinus pressure behind my cheek bones is pulsating. Remember Will Smith’s character in the movie Hitch? Well, I could give him a run for his money!
All of this because one of our farm animals has a tiny eye infection and I had to help administer the eye drops..cue the instant allergy attack. And, as crazy as it sounds, I wouldn’t change it for the world. Okay, maybe the allergy part (actually, FOR SURE the allergy part), but nothing else.
You see, my kids have learned invaluable lessons from our farm animals.
Watching a mother cat give birth for the first time has taught them about the miracle of life. Tending to a sick bunny has provided them the opportunity to grow in empathy. Responsibility is ingrained each morning when they have to forge ahead, no matter the weather, to collect our daily ducks eggs.
There truly is something about farm animals that bring about a special tenderness in us. So, bring on the allergies…it’s worth it!
